Kentucky SNOW REPORT
March 29 2024
Snowpack conditions in Kentucky vary depending on the specific mountain ranges in the state. The Appalachian Mountains, including the Cumberland Plateau and the Pine Mountain, provide the most significant snowfall. These ranges contribute to the snowpack in several important watersheds, such as the Cumberland River and the Big Sandy River.
Winter climate characteristics in Kentucky are typically mild, with average temperatures ranging from 30°F to 50°F. However, during colder periods, the mountainous regions can experience heavier snowfall.
Interestingly, Kentucky is known for its unique snow science history. Dr. Wilson A. Bentley, a renowned pioneer in snowflake photography, photographed snowflakes in Jericho, Vermont, and Lexington, Kentucky, during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. His work contributed significantly to our understanding of snow crystal morphology.
While Kentucky does not typically experience heavy snowfall, the mountainous regions contribute to snowpack conditions and play an essential role in the state's water resources.
