Watershed Hydrology

The South Branch Potomac Watershed (HUC 02070001) covers approximately 2,350 square miles in West Virginia and Maryland. The region is characterized by steep hillsides and narrow valleys, with elevations ranging from 500 to 4,200 feet. The hydrology of the area is dominated by the South Branch Potomac River, which flows for 97 miles through the watershed. The average annual precipitation in the region is about 45 inches, with most of it falling as snow during the winter months. The watershed is home to several surface water reservoirs, including Jennings Randolph Lake and Savage River Reservoir. The reservoirs are important sources of drinking water and recreation for local communities. Interesting climatic trends in the area include an increase in precipitation over the past few decades, as well as a decrease in the number of freeze-thaw events during the winter months.
