Watershed Hydrology

The Great Wicomico-Piankatank Watershed is located in eastern Virginia and covers an area of approximately 619 square miles. The watershed is primarily composed of forested land, with agriculture and urban areas also present. The hydrology of the watershed is influenced by the Chesapeake Bay and its tributaries. The area receives an average of 43 inches of precipitation annually, with snowfall occurring occasionally during the winter months. Surface water in the watershed is used for both recreational and commercial purposes, including fishing and shellfish harvesting. The watershed contains several reservoirs, the largest being the Lake Anna Reservoir, which supplies drinking water to several communities. Interesting climatic trends in the watershed include an increase in precipitation over the past few decades, as well as an increase in the frequency of extreme weather events such as hurricanes and flooding.
