Lower James

Watershed Hydrology

The Lower James Watershed (HUC 02080206) covers an area of approximately 13,177 square miles in Virginia. The James River is the primary hydrologic feature of the watershed, and it flows for approximately 340 miles from the Blue Ridge Mountains to the Chesapeake Bay. The region receives significant precipitation throughout the year, and snowfall is common in the winter months. The snowpack in the mountains contributes to the surface water in the James River and its tributaries during the spring and summer months. The watershed includes several reservoirs, including Lake Moomaw and Lake Anna, which serve as important sources of drinking water for the region. Interesting climatic facts and trends include the increased frequency of extreme weather events, such as hurricanes and heavy rainfall, which can lead to flooding and water quality concerns in the watershed.
