Watershed Hydrology

The Tampa Bay watershed (HUC 03100206) covers an area of approximately 2,400 square miles in west-central Florida. The hydrology of the area is dominated by the Hillsborough River and its tributaries, which provide the majority of the surface water flowing into Tampa Bay. The region experiences a subtropical climate with hot, humid summers and mild winters. Interestingly, the region experiences a wet season from May to September, followed by a dry season from October to April. The area does not typically experience significant snowpack. The surface water in Tampa Bay is home to a diverse range of fish and wildlife, including manatees and sea turtles. The reservoirs in the watershed are primarily used for drinking water supply, and can also serve as a buffer during periods of drought. There is ongoing concern about the impact of urbanization and development on the water quality and ecology of the Tampa Bay watershed.
