Bogue Chitto

Watershed Hydrology

The Bogue Chitto Watershed, located in southern Mississippi and southeastern Louisiana, spans over 1,300 square miles. It is characterized by a humid subtropical climate with warm summers and mild winters. The watershed is dominated by forested wetlands, with over 60% of the land area being classified as wetlands. The hydrology of the Bogue Chitto watershed is heavily influenced by precipitation, which ranges from 50-65 inches annually. The area also experiences periodic severe flooding due to tropical storms and hurricanes. Surface water in the watershed is primarily from the Bogue Chitto River, which is fed by numerous small streams and tributaries. There are several reservoirs in the watershed, including the Bogue Chitto Lake and the Pearl River Reservoir. In terms of snowpack, the Bogue Chitto watershed does not typically receive significant amounts of snowfall due to its location in the southern United States. Interesting climatic trends in the area include an increase in average annual temperature and a decrease in annual precipitation over the past few decades.
