Watershed Hydrology

The Cattaraugus Watershed, located in western New York, has a land area of approximately 2,350 square miles. The region is characterized by a humid continental climate with moderate precipitation throughout the year. The watershed is home to several rivers, streams, and reservoirs, including the Allegheny River and Kinzua Reservoir. Snowpack in the region is variable, with some areas receiving more than 100 inches annually. Surface water quality is generally good, although some areas experience issues with sediment and nutrient runoff. Reservoir constituents include a variety of fish species, including bass, walleye, and trout. In recent years, the region has experienced a trend of increasing precipitation, which has led to more frequent flooding events. Additionally, the region is vulnerable to climate change impacts, including increased frequency and severity of extreme weather events.
