Lower Genesee

Watershed Hydrology

The Lower Genesee Watershed (HUC 04130003) is located in western New York and has a total land area of approximately 1,960 square miles. The watershed is dominated by agricultural land use, with smaller portions of urban and forested areas. The Genesee River flows through the watershed, providing the primary source of surface water. The hydrology of the watershed is characterized by frequent floods, particularly during the spring snowmelt and heavy rainfall events. The watershed receives an average of 100 inches of snowfall per year, which contributes to the snowpack and subsequent spring runoff. The surface water in the watershed is impacted by sediment and nutrient runoff from agricultural and urban areas, as well as industrial pollution. Notable climatic trends in the watershed include an increase in extreme precipitation events and warmer winter temperatures.
