Watershed Hydrology

The Conemaugh Watershed (HUC 05010007) covers an area of approximately 1,538 square miles in Western Pennsylvania. The watershed is home to several streams and rivers, including the Little Conemaugh River, Stonycreek River, and Conemaugh River. The hydrology of the region is heavily influenced by snowpack, with winter precipitation accounting for the majority of the annual water supply. Climate trends in the region have shown an increase in average temperatures and a decrease in snowpack over the past few decades. The surface water quality in the Conemaugh Watershed has been impacted by past coal mining activities, leading to high levels of acidity and heavy metal contamination. Additionally, the area is home to several reservoirs, including the Conemaugh Dam and the Quemahoning Reservoir, which serve as important sources of drinking water for surrounding communities. Overall, the Conemaugh Watershed is an important natural resource in Pennsylvania, but also faces significant environmental challenges.
