Watershed Hydrology

The West Fork watershed (HUC 05020002) covers an area of approximately 1,121 square miles in northern Arizona. The hydrology of the region is characterized by the West Fork of the Little Colorado River, which runs through the center of the watershed. The area experiences a semi-arid climate, with average annual precipitation of around 20 inches. Snowpack in the watershed is a critical source of surface water, providing around 80% of the annual streamflow. The watershed also contains several important reservoirs, including the Ashurst Lake and the Lake Mary Reservoir. Interesting climatic facts and trends in the area include increasing temperatures over the past few decades, which have led to changes in snowpack and streamflow patterns. Additionally, severe droughts in recent years have further impacted water availability in the region, highlighting the need for careful water management strategies.
