Watershed Hydrology

The Embarras Watershed (HUC 05120112) covers an area of approximately 1,960 square miles in Illinois. The main river, Embarras River, is a tributary of the Wabash River, and the watershed includes smaller streams and lakes. The hydrology of the watershed is heavily influenced by the surrounding topography, with the majority of the water flowing from east to west. The area experiences a continental climate with hot summers and cold winters. The snowpack in the watershed is variable, with some years having heavy snowpack and others having very little. Surface water is used for drinking water, recreation, and agriculture. The reservoirs in the area have constituents that include silt, sediment, and nutrients. Interesting climatic facts and trends include an increase in extreme weather events, such as heavy rains and droughts, and an overall warming trend.
