Watershed Hydrology

The Zumbro Watershed, located in southeastern Minnesota within the Upper Mississippi River Basin, covers over 2,000 square miles and is home to nearly 400,000 people. The watershed is characterized by a variety of land uses, including agriculture, forested areas, and urban development. The Zumbro River is the main surface water feature of the watershed, with several smaller tributaries feeding into it. The region experiences a humid continental climate, with cold winters and warm summers. The snowpack in the watershed varies from year to year, with some years experiencing significant snowfall. The reservoirs within the watershed are primarily used for flood control, and their constituents include sediment and nutrients from upstream sources. In recent years, there has been an increase in precipitation and flooding events, which is likely due to climate change. Efforts are underway to address water quality concerns within the watershed, including reducing sediment and nutrient runoff from agricultural activities.
