Watershed Hydrology

The Tallahatchie watershed (HUC 08030202) covers an area of 5,454 square miles in northwestern Mississippi, with the majority of land use being agricultural. The watershed is characterized by a humid subtropical climate with hot summers and mild winters. The hydrology of the watershed is dominated by the Tallahatchie River and its tributaries, which are prone to flooding during periods of heavy rainfall. The watershed has a relatively low snowpack, with average snowfall ranging from 1-2 inches annually. Surface water in the watershed is primarily used for irrigation and municipal supply, with some recreational use as well. Reservoirs in the watershed contain mainly sediment and organic material. Interesting climatic trends include an increase in average temperatures over the past few decades, as well as an increase in extreme precipitation events.
