Watershed Hydrology

The Tangipahoa Watershed (HUC 08070205) covers approximately 1,283 square miles in southeastern Louisiana and southwestern Mississippi. Water from the watershed flows into Lake Pontchartrain and the Gulf of Mexico. The hydrology of the watershed is largely influenced by the Tickfaw and Tangipahoa rivers, which are both prone to flooding during heavy rain events. The area does not typically receive significant snowfall. Surface water in the watershed is used for recreation, industrial purposes, and as a source of drinking water for nearby communities. Reservoirs in the watershed include the Percy Quin Reservoir and the Tangipahoa Reservoir. Interesting climatic facts include the area's vulnerability to hurricanes, which can cause significant flooding, and its relatively high average annual rainfall of around 60 inches. Trends in the area include efforts to improve water quality and mitigate flooding through watershed management strategies.
