West Central Louisiana Coastal

Watershed Hydrology

The West Central Louisiana Coastal Watershed covers approximately 1,661 square miles and includes portions of Rapides, Avoyelles, Allen, and Evangeline Parishes. The hydrology is characterized by the Red River and its tributaries, including Bayou Boeuf and Bayou Cocodrie. This area typically does not experience significant snowpack. Surface water resources exist in the form of streams, rivers, and lakes, including Lake Cotile and Lake Ophelia. Reservoir constituents include fish species such as largemouth bass, crappie, and catfish. Interesting climatic facts include the area's susceptibility to hurricanes, with Hurricane Rita causing significant damage in 2005. Trends in recent years have shown an increase in precipitation, particularly during the winter months, leading to some flooding concerns. The watershed also faces challenges from agricultural runoff and urbanization, which can contribute to water quality issues.
