Watershed Hydrology

The Judith Watershed (HUC 10040103) covers an area of approximately 6,500 square miles in central Montana. The watershed is characterized by a semi-arid climate with low precipitation and high evapotranspiration rates. The hydrology of the watershed is dominated by the Judith River, which flows through the center of the region and is fed by numerous tributaries. Snowpack accumulation in the watershed is variable, with some areas receiving significant snowfall and others receiving very little. Surface water in the watershed is relatively scarce and is primarily used for irrigation and livestock watering purposes. The main reservoir in the watershed is the Judith Basin Reservoir, which provides irrigation water and serves as a recreation area. Interesting climatic facts and trends in the Judith Watershed include increasing temperatures, decreasing precipitation, and more frequent extreme weather events. These trends are likely to have significant impacts on the hydrology and ecology of the region.
