Big Papillion-Mosquito

Watershed Hydrology

The Big Papillion Mosquito Watershed (HUC 10230006) covers approximately 1,252 square miles in eastern Nebraska. The primary surface water source in the watershed is the Papillion Creek, which flows through the Omaha metropolitan area. The watershed has a humid continental climate with hot summers and cold winters, and experiences seasonal snow cover from November to March. The Papillion Creek provides drinking water to over 200,000 residents and also supports numerous recreational activities such as fishing and boating. However, the watershed faces challenges from nonpoint source pollution from agricultural activities and urban runoff, which can lead to degraded water quality. The presence of invasive species such as Asian carp poses a threat to native fish populations. Efforts are underway to improve water quality in the watershed through the implementation of best management practices and restoration projects.
