East Nishnabotna

Watershed Hydrology

The East Nishnabotna Watershed (HUC 10240003) is located in western Iowa and covers an area of approximately 1,026 square miles. The watershed is characterized by a humid continental climate, with hot summers and cold winters. The hydrology of the watershed is characterized by relatively low annual precipitation, with an average of 30 inches per year. Snowfall is also relatively low, averaging around 25 inches per year. Surface water in the watershed is primarily derived from precipitation and snowmelt. There are several small reservoirs located within the watershed, which are used for flood control and recreation. The main land use in the watershed is agriculture, with significant portions of the land devoted to corn and soybean production. This has led to concerns over nutrient pollution in the surface water, particularly from agricultural runoff containing nitrogen and phosphorus. In recent years, the area has experienced increasing frequency and intensity of extreme weather events, such as flooding and drought, which has impacted the hydrology of the watershed.
