Watershed Hydrology

The Platte Watershed (HUC 10240012) encompasses an area of approximately 82,500 square miles and includes parts of Wyoming, Colorado, and Nebraska. The watershed is characterized by a semi-arid climate and is largely dependent on snowmelt for its water supply. The watershed is home to several major rivers, including the North Platte, South Platte, and Platte rivers, which provide water for irrigation, recreation, and drinking water. The snowpack in the watershed is closely monitored, as it has a significant impact on water availability. The surface water in the watershed is also regularly tested for contaminants, including nitrogen and phosphorus, which can lead to harmful algal blooms. Climate change is expected to have significant impacts on the Platte Watershed, including changes in snowmelt timing and increased frequency of drought. Efforts are underway to improve water management practices and to protect the watershed's natural resources.
