South Fork Republican

Watershed Hydrology

The South Fork Republican watershed covers an area of approximately 2,320 square miles in northeastern Colorado. The hydrology of the watershed is dominated by the South Fork Republican River, which originates in the Colorado Rockies and flows eastward through the watershed. The area receives an average of 24 inches of precipitation annually, with the majority falling as snow during the winter months. The snowpack is an important source of surface water for the area, with the snowmelt contributing to streamflow in the spring and early summer. The watershed includes several reservoirs, with the largest being Bonny Reservoir, which has been impacted by declining water levels in recent years due to drought and increased water demands. The area experiences a semi-arid climate, with increasing temperatures and decreasing precipitation trends observed in recent decades.
