Watershed Hydrology

The Prairie Dog Watershed (HUC 10250015) is located in the southeastern corner of Montana and encompasses an area of 2,186.3 square miles. The hydrology of the area is dominated by the Powder River and its tributaries, which provide surface water for irrigation and livestock use. The area has a semi-arid climate, with hot summers and cold winters. Snowpack is an important source of water for the watershed, with an average snowfall of 35 inches per year. The major reservoir in the area is the Tongue River Reservoir, which is used for irrigation and flood control. The watershed is also home to a diverse range of flora and fauna, including prairie dogs, which are a keystone species. In recent years, the area has experienced prolonged droughts, which have had a significant impact on water availability and agricultural production.
