Watershed Hydrology

The Lower Kansas Watershed (HUC 10270104) covers approximately 5,650 square miles in eastern Kansas. The watershed includes the Kansas River and its tributaries, which provide important hydrological and ecological services to the region. Snowpack is generally low in the area due to its relatively low elevation, and precipitation falls primarily as rain. Surface water in the watershed is used for a variety of purposes, including drinking water, irrigation, and recreation. Several large reservoirs are located within the watershed, including the Tuttle Creek Reservoir and the Clinton Reservoir. These reservoirs serve as important sources of water storage and flood control for the region. Interesting climatic facts in the area include an average annual precipitation of 35 inches and an average annual temperature of 56 degrees Fahrenheit. Recent trends show an increase in extreme precipitation events and a decrease in snowpack due to climate change.
