Middle Big Blue

Watershed Hydrology

The Middle Big Blue watershed (HUC 10270202) covers a land area of approximately 2,096 square miles in eastern Nebraska. The hydrology of the watershed is influenced by the Big Blue River, which flows through the middle of the area. The region experiences a significant snowpack during the winter months, which contributes to the surface water supply in the spring and summer. The watershed also contains several reservoirs, including the Holmes Lake and Pawnee Lake, which are used for recreation and water supply purposes. Interesting climatic facts include occasional drought conditions, severe thunderstorms, and tornadoes. In recent years, the area has experienced an increase in heavy precipitation events, which can lead to flooding. Community efforts have been made to address water quality issues in the watershed, such as reducing nutrient runoff from agricultural activities.
