Watershed Hydrology

The Bull Shoals Lake watershed (HUC 11010003) covers approximately 1,764 square miles in northern Arkansas and southern Missouri. The hydrology of the watershed is characterized by steep terrain and highly variable precipitation, resulting in rapid runoff and flash flooding. The area receives an average snowpack of 12-24 inches, which contributes to the lake's water supply in the spring. Surface water in the lake is used for drinking water, recreation, and power generation, and is monitored for contaminants such as nitrogen, phosphorus, and sediment. The reservoir is also a popular destination for fishing and boating. Interesting climatic facts include extreme heat in the summer, with temperatures reaching over 90°F, and occasional winter storms with heavy snowfall.
