Watershed Hydrology

The Gar Peace Watershed (HUC 11030010) is an area of approximately 1,360 square miles in Colorado. The watershed is part of the Upper Colorado River Basin and is characterized by high elevations that range from 7,000 to 14,000 feet. The watershed receives significant amounts of snowfall, which is the primary source of water for the area. The snowpack typically accumulates from November to April and melts from May to July. Surface water in the watershed is primarily fed by snowmelt, with the major streams being the Garfield, North Fork of the Fryingpan, and South Fork of the Fryingpan Rivers. The watershed also has several reservoirs, including the Ruedi Reservoir and the Grizzly Reservoir. Interesting climatic trends in the area include increasing temperatures and decreasing snowpack in recent years, which have implications for the water supply and ecology of the region.
