South Fork Ninnescah

Watershed Hydrology

The South Fork Ninnescah watershed covers an area of approximately 1,373 square miles in south-central Kansas. The watershed is predominantly agricultural but also includes areas of grassland and forest. The hydrology of the watershed is characterized by intermittent streams, ponds, and wetlands. Snowpack is generally not a significant factor in the area due to the relatively low elevation and mild winter climate. Surface water is primarily supplied by precipitation and is used for irrigation and livestock watering. There are several reservoirs within the watershed, including Cheney Reservoir and El Dorado Reservoir. Interesting climatic facts about the area include its location within the Great Plains region, which experiences frequent thunderstorms, particularly during the summer months. Trends in precipitation and temperature in the area are consistent with broader patterns of climate change, including increasing temperatures and more variable precipitation patterns.
