Lower Walnut River

Watershed Hydrology

The Lower Walnut River Watershed (HUC 11030018) is located in southern Kansas and covers an area of approximately 1,512 square kilometers. The hydrology of the watershed is primarily influenced by the Walnut River, which flows through the area, as well as several smaller tributaries. The winter snowpack in the region is generally light, with average snowfall amounts ranging from 5-10 inches per year. Surface water in the watershed is primarily used for irrigation and recreation, with several reservoirs located throughout the area. Water quality in the reservoirs is generally good, with low levels of pollutants and nutrients. Interesting climatic facts and trends in the region include increasing temperatures and precipitation variability over the past several decades, as well as an increased frequency of extreme weather events such as droughts and floods.
