Watershed Hydrology

The Chikaskia watershed is located in south-central Kansas and covers an area of approximately 1,577 square miles. The hydrology of the watershed is dominated by the Chikaskia River, which is a tributary of the Arkansas River. The watershed receives an average of 32 inches of precipitation per year, with most of it occurring during the spring and summer months. Snowpack is typically minimal in the area due to the mild winter temperatures. Surface water in the watershed is primarily used for agricultural purposes, and the largest reservoir in the area is the El Dorado Reservoir. The watershed is subject to periodic droughts, with the most severe occurring in the 1930s and the 2010s. In recent years, the area has experienced an increase in extreme precipitation events, which has led to flooding and erosion concerns.
