Upper Salt Fork Red

Watershed Hydrology

The Upper Salt Fork Red Watershed (HUC 11120201) covers approximately 1,429 square miles in north-central Oklahoma. The watershed is largely composed of grasslands and croplands. It is drained by the Salt Fork of the Arkansas River and several other major tributaries. The area experiences a semi-arid climate, with precipitation averaging around 30 inches per year. Snowfall is rare in the region. Surface water sources in the watershed include several small lakes and reservoirs. Salinity is a concern in some of these bodies of water, and high levels of nitrogen and phosphorus have been detected in some areas. Climate change is expected to bring more extreme weather events, including droughts and floods, to the region. Water management practices will become increasingly important in the years ahead to ensure sustainable use of the watershed's resources.
