Watershed Hydrology

The Hondo Watershed, located in central New Mexico, has a land area of approximately 1,394 square miles. The hydrology of the watershed is influenced by the surrounding mountain ranges, which receive significant amounts of snow in the winter that slowly melt in the spring and summer months. The Hondo River, the main surface water feature of the watershed, is fed by numerous tributaries and supports agriculture and recreation in the area. The watershed also contains several reservoirs, including Bonito Lake and Grindstone Reservoir, which provide water for the city of Ruidoso. Interesting climatic facts include the area's high elevation, which results in cooler temperatures and increased precipitation compared to surrounding areas. However, recent trends indicate that the watershed may be experiencing increasing temperatures and decreasing snowpack, which could have significant impacts on local water resources in the future.
