Watershed Hydrology

The Atascosa watershed (HUC 12110110) covers an area of approximately 950 square miles in southern Arizona. The watershed is characterized by a semi-arid climate with hot, dry summers and mild winters. The hydrology of the watershed is dominated by intermittent streams and washes that are typically dry for most of the year. However, during periods of heavy precipitation, the streams can become fast-moving and dangerous. Snowpack in the Atascosa watershed is generally minimal due to the arid climate. Surface water resources in the watershed are limited, with most of the available water being stored in small reservoirs. These reservoirs are primarily used for agricultural purposes. The Atascosa watershed faces challenges related to water scarcity, soil erosion, and invasive plant species. Despite these challenges, efforts are underway to preserve and protect the ecological integrity of the watershed.
