Lower Gunnison

Watershed Hydrology

The Lower Gunnison Watershed covers approximately 3,200 square miles in western Colorado. The hydrology of the area is heavily influenced by snowmelt, with the majority of the water supply coming from winter snowpack. The watershed contains numerous surface water sources, including the Gunnison River and its tributaries, which provide critical habitat for a variety of fish and wildlife species. The watershed also contains several reservoirs, including the Blue Mesa Reservoir, which is Colorado's largest body of water. Interesting climatic facts include the fact that the region experiences a semi-arid climate, with dry summers and cold winters. In recent years, the area has experienced prolonged drought conditions, which have impacted water availability and wildlife populations. Additionally, climate change is expected to exacerbate these impacts in the coming years.
