Las Vegas Wash

Watershed Hydrology

The Las Vegas Wash Watershed covers an area of approximately 1,100 square miles and is located in Clark County, Nevada. The hydrology of the watershed is characterized by a highly variable climate, with intermittent and often intense rain events. The watershed is largely arid and experiences hot summers, cool winters, and low annual precipitation. Snowpack in the watershed is rare and typically limited to the higher elevations. Surface water is limited and largely dependent on imported water from the Colorado River. The watershed is home to several reservoirs, including Lake Mead, which provides critical water resources for the Las Vegas metropolitan area. As a result of increased development and population growth in the area, water quality in the watershed has become a major concern. Efforts are currently underway to improve water quality through the implementation of various conservation and management strategies.
