Pend Oreille Lake

Watershed Hydrology

The Pend Oreille Lake watershed covers an area of 2,202 square miles and is located in northern Idaho and eastern Washington. The region is characterized by mountainous terrain and is drained by the Pend Oreille River. The hydrology of the area is influenced by seasonal snowmelt and precipitation, which contribute to the flow of the river and the lake. The snowpack in the region is typically deep and persistent, with some areas receiving over 600 inches of snowfall annually. The lake and surrounding streams are home to a variety of fish species, including rainbow trout and kokanee salmon. The reservoir behind the Box Canyon Dam constitutes a significant portion of the surface water in the watershed. Climatic trends in the region include a warming trend over the past century, with average temperatures increasing by around 1.5 degrees Fahrenheit. This warming trend is expected to continue in the future, with implications for water availability and ecosystem health.
