Upper Columbia-Priest Rapids

Watershed Hydrology

The Upper Columbia Priest Rapids Watershed (HUC 17020016) spans over 2,500 square miles in central Washington State. It is home to several tributaries of the Columbia River, including the Yakima River and the Priest Rapids Reach. The region experiences distinct seasonal changes, with warm, dry summers and cold, snowy winters. Precipitation primarily occurs in the form of snow during the winter months, which accumulates in the mountains and feeds the region's water supply. The watershed includes several large reservoirs, including the Columbia River's Priest Rapids Dam and Wanapum Dam, which provide hydroelectric power to the region. The reservoirs also offer opportunities for recreation, such as boating and fishing. In recent years, the region has experienced prolonged drought conditions, which have impacted the snowpack and surface water availability. Climate models predict continued warming trends and more frequent droughts in the coming decades.
