Middle Owyhee

Watershed Hydrology

The Middle Owyhee watershed (HUC 17050107) covers an area of approximately 2,144 square miles in southwestern Idaho, and is characterized by a semi-arid climate with hot summers and cold winters. The watershed is largely dependant on snowpack, with the highest elevations receiving the most snowfall. The primary surface water source is the Owyhee River, which is fed by several tributaries including the South and Middle Forks. The area is also home to several reservoirs, including Lake Owyhee, which is used for irrigation, recreation, and flood control. Interesting climatic trends in the region include an overall decrease in snowpack and an increase in temperatures, which can have significant impacts on the availability of water resources. The Middle Owyhee watershed is an important area for both ecological and economic reasons, and efforts are underway to manage the area's resources sustainably.
