Lower Selway

Watershed Hydrology

The Lower Selway Watershed (HUC 17060302) covers approximately 1,996 square miles in Idaho and Montana. The area is characterized by rugged terrain with high mountains, deep canyons, and steep slopes. The hydrology of the watershed is dominated by the Selway River, which is a tributary of the Middle Fork of the Clearwater River. The area receives significant snowfall in the winter, and the snowpack is an important source of surface water during the spring and summer. The watershed also contains several reservoirs, including the Selway Falls reservoir, which is used for hydroelectric power generation. Climatic trends in the region have shown a warming trend over the past several decades, resulting in earlier snowmelt and reduced summer streamflows. The Lower Selway watershed is recognized as an important habitat for a variety of fish and wildlife species, including steelhead trout and elk.
