Middle Fork Clearwater

Watershed Hydrology

The Middle Fork Clearwater Watershed (HUC 17060304) covers approximately 1,103 square miles in north-central Idaho. The area is characterized by steep mountainous terrain, with elevations ranging from 1,900 to 7,300 feet. The watershed is home to several tributaries of the Middle Fork Clearwater River, which provide critical habitat for a variety of fish species, including Chinook salmon and steelhead trout. Snowpack is an important source of water in the watershed, with peak snow accumulation typically occurring in late March. The Middle Fork Clearwater River also receives significant contributions from surface water and groundwater sources. There are several reservoirs in the watershed, including the Dworshak Reservoir, which is the third-largest reservoir in Idaho. The reservoir is used for hydroelectric power generation, flood control, and recreation. The area experiences a continental climate characterized by cold winters and warm summers. Interesting climatic facts include that the area receives an average of 74 inches of snowfall per year, and there has been a trend of increasing winter temperatures over the past few decades.
