Watershed Hydrology

The Applegate Watershed (HUC 17100309) is located in southwest Oregon and covers approximately 487 square miles. It is a sub-basin of the larger Rogue River watershed. The area experiences a Mediterranean climate with hot, dry summers and cool, wet winters. The watershed is home to a diverse array of flora and fauna, including several threatened and endangered species. The hydrology of the Applegate Watershed is dominated by the Applegate River, which flows for approximately 51 miles before joining the Rogue River. The watershed also contains several smaller streams and tributaries. Snowpack in the area typically accumulates in the higher elevations during the winter months, with peak accumulation occurring in March. Surface water quality in the Applegate Watershed is generally good, with low levels of pollutants and high levels of dissolved oxygen. The watershed also contains several reservoirs, including the Applegate Reservoir, which is used for recreation and as a source of drinking water. In recent years, the Applegate Watershed has experienced several periods of drought, with lower-than-normal snowpack and reduced water availability during the summer months. Additionally, climate change is expected to exacerbate these trends in the coming years.
