Upper Juniata

Watershed Hydrology

The Upper Juniata Watershed (HUC 02050302) covers approximately 1,220 square miles in central Pennsylvania. It is characterized by rolling hills and agricultural land use, with the Juniata River being the mainstem. The watershed experiences a humid continental climate with warm summers and cold winters. Snowpack in the area is highly variable and can range from several inches to several feet, with snowmelt contributing to surface water runoff. The watershed contains several reservoirs, including Raystown Lake, which serves as a major recreational destination and provides water to surrounding communities. Surface water quality in the watershed has been impacted by agricultural practices and urbanization. Climate change is projected to bring warmer temperatures and more intense precipitation events to the region, which could further impact water resources and quality.
