Watershed Hydrology

The Rivanna Watershed (HUC 02080204) covers an area of approximately 437 square miles in central Virginia. The Watershed is primarily composed of forest and agricultural lands, with the Rivanna River serving as the main source of surface water. The region generally experiences a humid subtropical climate, with hot summers and mild winters. The region typically receives around 24 inches of snowfall each year. The Rivanna Watershed provides drinking water for more than 200,000 people in the area. Reservoir constituents include sediment, nutrients, and pollutants such as bacteria and chemicals from agricultural and urban sources. Climate change is also having an impact on the region, with increased temperatures and more frequent extreme weather events such as droughts and floods. The Watershed is an important ecological and recreational resource, providing habitat for a diverse range of species and supporting activities such as boating, fishing, and hiking.
