Watershed Hydrology

The Lumber Watershed (HUC 03040203) is located in southeastern North Carolina and covers an area of approximately 1,450 square miles. The watershed is mainly composed of flat terrain with deep soils and has a humid subtropical climate with hot summers and mild winters. The region receives an average annual precipitation of 52 inches, with a significant amount coming from tropical cyclones during the summer and fall months. The watershed is primarily drained by the Lumber River, which is a blackwater river system that flows into the Atlantic Ocean. The river is used for recreational activities such as fishing, boating, and hiking. The watershed is also home to the Lumber River State Park and the Waccamaw National Wildlife Refuge. The snowpack in this region is minimal due to its location in the subtropics. Reservoirs in the watershed are mainly used for water supply and recreation.
