Watershed Hydrology

The Aucilla watershed (HUC 03110103) is located in the northeastern region of Florida and covers approximately 1,203 square miles. The hydrology of the watershed is primarily controlled by the Aucilla River, which is a spring-fed, blackwater river that flows into the Gulf of Mexico. The watershed receives little to no snowpack, as the climate is subtropical and experiences mild winters. Surface water in the watershed is mainly composed of wetlands, streams, and springs. The reservoir in the area is small and man-made. Interesting climatic facts include the area experiencing a high frequency of thunderstorms in the summer months and occasional tropical storms in the fall. Trends in the area include a rise in sea level due to climate change, leading to increased coastal erosion and saltwater intrusion into freshwater resources. Additionally, the watershed is facing challenges from urbanization and agricultural land use practices that can lead to water quality degradation.
