Watershed Hydrology

The Tradewater Watershed, located in western Kentucky, covers a land area of approximately 1,640 square miles. The hydrology of the watershed is characterized by a humid subtropical climate, with precipitation averaging around 50 inches per year. Snowfall is infrequent, with an average of only 6 inches per year. The surface water of the watershed is primarily made up of the Tradewater River and its tributaries, which flow through both rural and urban areas. The river is used for recreation and as a source of drinking water for some communities. The watershed also contains several reservoirs, including Lake Malone and Lake Beshear, which are used for flood control, recreation, and water supply. Interesting climatic facts and trends include an increase in annual precipitation over the past century and an increase in the frequency and severity of extreme weather events, such as floods and droughts.
