Lake Red Rock

Watershed Hydrology

The Lake Red Rock Watershed, located in Iowa, covers a land area of approximately 1,430 square miles. The watershed is primarily agricultural, with corn and soybean production being the most common land use. The hydrology of the watershed is dominated by the Des Moines River, which provides the main source of surface water for the Lake Red Rock reservoir. The watershed experiences an average annual snowfall of around 28 inches. The surface water in the reservoir is known to contain sediment, nitrogen, and phosphorus, which can cause water quality issues if not properly managed. Interesting climatic trends in the watershed include an overall increase in temperature and precipitation over the past few decades, which has led to more frequent and intense flooding events. Additionally, the watershed is prone to severe weather events such as tornadoes and thunderstorms.
