Watershed Hydrology

The Lower Mississippi Natchez Watershed (HUC 08060100) covers over 7,500 square miles in Mississippi and Louisiana. The watershed is primarily fed by the Mississippi River and its tributaries, which provide significant hydrologic flow and discharge. Snowpack is generally not a significant factor in the region's hydrology. Surface water in the watershed includes not only the Mississippi River but also many smaller streams, creeks, and bayous. Reservoirs in the watershed are primarily used for flood control and navigation purposes. Interesting climatic facts include the region's humid subtropical climate, which brings hot, humid summers and mild winters with regular rainfall. Trends in the region include a continued focus on water management and conservation efforts, as well as increasing attention to the impacts of climate change on the area's hydrology and ecology.
