Watershed Hydrology

The Roseau Watershed (HUC 09020314) covers approximately 1,040 square miles in northwest Minnesota, with the Roseau River serving as the main waterway. The region is characterized by a humid continental climate with cold winters and warm summers. The area receives an average of 39 inches of precipitation annually, with about 70% of that falling as snow. The watershed is home to several wetlands, lakes, and streams, which play a critical role in managing surface water runoff and maintaining water quality. The Roseau River and its tributaries are important for drainage and agricultural irrigation. There are also numerous dams and reservoirs in the watershed, including the Lake Bronson Dam and the J. Clark Salyer National Wildlife Refuge Reservoir. Climate trends in the area show an increase in annual precipitation and more frequent extreme weather events.
