North Fork Republican

Watershed Hydrology

The North Fork Republican Watershed (HUC 10250002) is located in northwestern Kansas and covers an area of approximately 2,040 square miles. The watershed is primarily agricultural, with the majority of the land used for farming and ranching. The hydrology of the area is dominated by intermittent streams and small tributaries that flow into the Republican River. The watershed is also influenced by the Ogallala Aquifer, which is an important source of groundwater for the region. Snowpack is not a significant factor in the North Fork Republican Watershed due to its location in a semi-arid region. Surface water is primarily derived from rainfall events, which can be highly variable from year to year. Reservoir constituents include sediment, nutrients, and contaminants from agricultural runoff. Interesting climatic facts and trends include an increasing trend in average temperatures over the past few decades, as well as an increase in the frequency and intensity of extreme weather events such as droughts and floods.
