Watershed Hydrology

The Middle Republican Watershed (HUC 10250016) covers approximately 3,115 square kilometers in Nebraska and Kansas. The watershed is characterized by a semi-arid climate and is dominated by rangeland and cropland. Hydrologically, the watershed is part of the Republican River Basin and experiences intermittent stream flow with most of the flow coming from groundwater. The watershed receives most of its precipitation in the form of snow during the winter months, which contributes to the spring runoff. The surface water in the watershed is of high quality, with low levels of pollutants. The reservoirs in the watershed are primarily used for irrigation and recreation, and their constituents include sediment, nitrogen, and phosphorus. Interesting climatic facts include the fact that the watershed has experienced severe droughts in the past, and there is evidence of climate change affecting the hydrology of the area.
