Watershed Hydrology

The Shenandoah Watershed covers approximately 6,000 square miles in Virginia and West Virginia. The hydrology of the watershed is heavily influenced by the Appalachian Mountains, which run through the region. The Shenandoah River is the main surface water feature in the watershed and provides drinking water for over one million people. The region experiences a varied climate, with average annual precipitation of around 40 inches, and temperatures ranging from below freezing in the winter to over 90 degrees Fahrenheit in the summer. Snowfall can occur throughout the winter months, with occasional heavy snowstorms. The watershed includes several large reservoirs, including Lake Shenandoah and Lake Moomaw, which provide hydroelectric power and recreation opportunities. The watershed has experienced increased nutrient pollution in recent years, leading to harmful algal blooms and fish kills. Conservation efforts are underway to address these issues and protect the health of the watershed.
